Hours of Service Exemption Declared for Nova Scotia

On June 5, 2023, Nova Scotia Vehicle Transportation Inspection published an Hours of Service Exemption (tracking number ASF- 2023-01E) for certain commercial vehicles through June 12, 2023. The purpose of this exemption is to support efforts by extra-provincial truck undertakings and their drivers to transport essential supplies and equipment, in direct assistance to the emergency relief efforts in response to the wildfires in Nova Scotia.

A copy of the exemption, available here, must be placed in the commercial vehicles that are supporting this emergency relief. Additional conditions apply before exercising this Hours of Service waiver, with full details provided in the aforementioned link. The declaration does not specifically cite commodities covered, but shippers are encouraged to indicate on the bill of lading that the supplies and equipment being transported are in direct assistance to the emergency relief efforts related to the wildfires in Nova Scotia. Drivers must not drive if their faculties are impaired by fatigue to the point where it is unsafe to drive.

NTTC staff will continue to monitor this and other emergency declarations, and will share updates when available.
