Help ATRI Quantify Impact of 34 Hour Restart Provisions

Many tank truck carriers have expressed concerns about the impact of 34-hour restart provisions of the Hours of Service rules set to go into effect next July. The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has initiated research to quantify impacts to the trucking industry of changes.  The 34-hour restart includes a requirement that a restart time period includes two periods between 1:00 a.m. – 5:00 a.m. and a limitation of one restart per week.

ATRI’s research will include a survey on motor carrier costs and operational impacts expected from the change.  ATRI will launch the survey in September.  If you are interested in learning more about the research and potentially contributing data to the analysis, contact Jeff Short at jshort@trucking.org.  We encourage you to supply information to ATRI and to send a copy of your comments to NTTC.

ATRI also has asked tank truck carriers for input for its 2012 Top Industry Issues Survey.  The annual survey, commissioned by the American Trucking Associations (ATA), asks trucking industry stakeholders to rank the top issues of concern for the industry along with appropriate strategies for addressing each issue.  Industry stakeholders are encouraged to complete the survey online at http://atri-online.org/2012/08/01/critical-issues-in-the-trucking-industry-2012/.  Alternately a paper copy is available on ATRI’s website at www.atri-online.org.
